Experience Design

Immersive experiences bring the content out of the box into the environment where audiences can step into worlds and engage with multi-sensory interactions in physical space. These theatrical installations are often the highlight of a museum exhibition, brand activation, or pop-up event.

One of the interesting challenges in this work is the interaction design, where we explore novel human-computer interfaces using sensors and actuators to create physical interactions. When we move from interacting with buttons and screens to using body movement, gesture, voice or manipulation of tangible objects, a sense of magic and awe arises. These unique experiences, coupled with thoughtful narrative content provide memorable engagements that can educate and delight.

Apex Session, Hexagon, Las Vegas, 2023

Apex Session was a sustainability summit created for Hexagon in conjunction with HxGN LIVE Global 2023 in Las Vegas. This idea exchange workshop was staged in an immersive media environment, where select group of cross-industry executives were convened to initiate a transformative dialog on solving decarbonization challenges in ways that far exceed the impact of traditional corporate ESG initiatives. Inspired by an exhibition of case studies and influential speakers, the participants spent an afternoon discovering new perspectives and building relationships through a program of activities and facilitated discussion. As the producer I participated in the experience concept development and coordinated the content creation, event plan and documentation.

Polish Table, Poland Pavilion at Expo2020: Dubai, 2021

The central exhibit of the Poland pavilion was a celebration of hospitality, where student “hosts” greeted visitors with an invitation to meet one another in an exchange around the Polish Table. The table is an interactive art installation providing a bounty of content to learn about Poland’s materials, creators, and culture. Large illuminated microphones translate participants’ voices into animated trails of light that meander and merge across the table, visually reflecting the participants’ exchange. As producer, I led the design team on concept development and detailed design of the experience, in partnership with other international teams who created the parametric design of the physical table, its unique component modules, and fabricated the installation for the Expo.

Panama Is The Museum, Biomuseo, Panama, 2019

The curators at Biomuseo wanted visitors to discovery the rich variety of natural and cultural experiences they can visit around the country. We used people sensors to trigger floor animations, so when a visitor steps on a “hot spot” the graphics reveal new content projected onto a central sculpture representing the country’s geography. As producer on the project, I led the process from initial discovery through concept development and prototyping, to design, fabrication and installation on site.

Japanese Tea Ceremony, Detroit Institute of Arts, 2018

An interactive narrative that combined physical, graphical, and audio story elements for a multi-sensory experience that gave visitors a deeper understanding of the ritual so they could better appreciate the historical artifacts in the museum’s collection. As producer on this project I led the design team in concept development, media production, and final delivery.

Balance Table, David Rose, 2017

The Balance Table is a functional concept prototype of furniture with ambient interaction, as a tool for facilitating collaborative conversation, and improving social dynamics through self-awareness. Embedded sound sensors and LEDs reveal the relative amount of participation without storing any data subtly. This project was developed for David Rose, author of the book Enchanted Objects, and my role was to create the concept film that demonstrates the table in action.
